Roy’s Desert Springs Adult Residential Care
Roy’s Desert Springs Adult Residential Care (Roy’s) is a 92 bed capacity Adult Residential Care Facility licensed by the State of California Community Care Licensing Division. Roy’s has establish a Wellness Plus Living Program (WPLP) at the county owned facility located at 19531 McLane Street, Palm Springs, CA 92558 (Roy's Desert Springs). The facility is a longer term, but not permanent, enhanced residential living program.
The WPLP will provide enhanced behavioral health recovery focused supports in addition to basic care and supervision in an adult residential care facility environment.
The target population will be adults ages 18-59 with serious and persistent mental health disorder(s) that significantly impair their ability to live in the community without the services available through the WPLP. This will include individuals who have reached a level of psychiatric stabilization from an acute or long-term psychiatric facility but require continued community-based support in a supervised residential setting. These consumers are generally characterized by a history of severe and persistent mental health disorders that has resulted in significant disabling functional impairments related to their mental health disorder(s); would typically be on, or have a history of LPS conservatorship; or who may have co-occurring substance use or physical health disorders (such as insulin dependent diabetes, utilized a CPAP device, have some ambulation challenges, etc. that are often barriers to receiving licensed residential services due to lack of CCL required waivers) that contribute to lack of access to community-based support or licensed placement options.
Potential residents are identified by Riverside University Health System –Behavioral Health (RUHS-BH), based on appropriateness for community-based residential care, the consumer's need for WPLP level of care, and placement priorities determined by population census/capacity of higher level of care facilities.
The Program Services for the WPLP, in addition to providing basic care and supervision will utilize the Whole Health Action Management (WHAM) a peer-led program for people with chronic physical and behavioral health conditions that promotes self-management to create and sustain new health behavior. WHAM provides peer support professionals and volunteers a format for peer support meetings in which consumers engage in WHAM groups to support one another as they work toward, achieve, and maintain whole health goals. The skills learned in WHAM help participants engage in self-management and crystalize goals to achieve better whole health and wellness.
MFI through WHAM creates a collaborative care model that wrap services around the client and re-connect or connect the client to additional necessary services that would assist them in their transition back to the community. Collaboration with the client’s outside health providers would be essential to ensure a “Whole Health” approach in addressing the client’s chronic (and serious) mental illness and/or co-morbidity of mental illness and substance use. The peer support nature of WHAM will help clients acquire self-sufficiency in managing their chronic mental illness. The acquisition of self-management skills will help the client develop problem solving and self-efficacy skills require to managed his/her chronic condition.
